Needless to say, being familiar with your state’s solar access laws can be a total game-changer when dealing with a stubborn HOA.
Educating Homeowners and HOAs
Another key strategy is to make sure your customers, and the HOA themselves, are fully informed about solar technology and the associated benefits. A lot of times, HOA board members are working off outdated information or misconceptions about solar.
That’s where you come in! Provide your customers with educational materials about solar access laws, the positive impact of solar on property values, and examples of successful installations in similar neighborhoods. This can go a long way in easing the HOA’s concerns and getting them on board with the project.
And don’t forget to educate the HOA directly too. I’ve found that a little bit of outreach and open communication can work wonders. Explain the ins and outs of solar technology, show them how the panels will look, and highlight the potential benefits to the community. Once they understand that solar isn’t just a passing fad, they’re often much more receptive to approving the installation.

Even in states with strong solar access laws, HOAs can still get a bit creative with their restrictions. But that’s where you, the solar installer, need to get your thinking cap on and come up with some outside-the-box solutions.
For example, the HOA might insist that the panels be a solid black color instead of the traditional blue-ish hue. Or they might demand that the wiring be completely hidden from view. No problem! With a little bit of flexibility and some creative problem-solving, you can usually find a way to meet their requirements without compromising the effectiveness of the solar system.
